Hearthstone Museum Hosts President Theodore Roosevelt

On Thurs. Nov. 17, Hearthstone is inviting the public to the Radisson Paper Valley for An Evening of Historic Proportions With President Theodore Roosevelt. The evening begins at 5:00 and tickets can be purchased from Hearthstone. This event is a fundraiser for the museum. Included in the evening is a silent auction, dinner, and a talk about TR’s life, great accomplishments, & viewpoints.

Gib Young’s hours of study, research, and watching and listening to audio & video samples of Mr. Roosevelt have enhanced the remarkable physical resemblance of Theodore Roosevelt-circa 1915. Gib considers himself more of an amateur historian than entertainer. But bringing the 26th President alive before modern Americans cannot help but be entertaining as TR recounts the many adventures in his life.

Mr. Young, historical interpreter, arrived in Appleton on Nov. 14. It has been our privilege to offer lodging to Gib Young during his visit here! Ron & Judy were impressed with his love of history. He enjoys reading historical books, but also visited historical landmarks in this area.

Mr. Young enjoyed spending his days visiting school children here in Appleton. The children loved meeting the man the Teddy Bear was named after.

Gib had some time to tour our local History Museum at the Castle, also. He admired the new exhibit displaying Progressive Appleton through the lens of W.D. Schlaffer. The exhibit includes photographs during the turn of the 20th century. Gib & I, both with a love for history, discussed how we just did not want to leave this exhibit! What a fine representation of past life in Appleton which contrasts with Appleton’s present day buildings. Owning two historical turn of the century homes in Appleton, made it very exciting for me to visualize the city life that our home owners lived in 1900.

Culinary Skills Refined by Franklin Street Inn Chef Judy

Judy Halma, inn-keeper, had the opportunity to attend the Osthoff Culinary School this week. The class that she took was called European Breakfast. Chef Scott J. Baker, graduate of The Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY, taught everyone culinary skills that he developed for the resort L’ecole de la Maison.

Breakfasts at the inn will not be the same anymore! New recipes have been found. Judy is always up for a new challenge. Have you ever tasted Flaming Crepes Suzette with Raspberries? Well there was a whole lot of chopping going on to prepare a Tomato & Leek Quiche, too! Everyone in the class was busy trying new recipes and adding a few new cooking techniques to their past skills.
Even though working on new recipes was a great experience, we all concluded that the grand finale definitely became the highlight. Of course, the students had to sample their work. We had the privilege to sample seven different entrees. These tasty treats were an incredible experience! We know that the completed entrees flavor was enhanced due to the high quality ingredients used: fresh herbs, fruits, & vegetables, aged hard cheeses, organic eggs, butter, smoked salmon, & morel mushrooms. The class ended with all students being excused from washing the dishes. Hooray!
